Women of African descent may that it is impossible to make black hair grow long. This is false. But black women use many many practices that prevent hair growth. In order to grow your tresses as a black woman, the following are some great tips to grow long black hair.

Characteristics

An understanding of the black hair structure and characteristics is necessary to start off with. This hair type is evidenced by curly and kinky strands that may be tightly coiled. This curly and kinky structure means that it is impossible for sebum or oil to travel from the sebaceous (oil) glands in the scalp to the ends of the tresses to moisturize the hair which leads to excessive dryness.

When compared to strands that are straighter, the sebum is able to easily travel from the roots to the ends which helps to keep the tresses moisturized which helps to prevent breakage.

The dry tresses that most black people have makes it difficult but not impossible to grow long tresses. This is due to the fact that when the strands are dry, they can easily break or snap off. Over time, you may think that your hair is just not growing but hair is constantly growing. It is just that because the strands are excessively dry, the ends are breaking off at the same rate that it is growing which means that your tresses will remain at relatively the same length year after year.

In order to grow long black hair, you need to limit this breakage. In order to limit this breakage you must overcome the dryness of the strands by keeping it moisturized on a consistent basis because moisturized tresses do not break easily and you shall be able to grow your hair.

Tips to Keep Hair Moisturized

1. Shampoo only once or twice a week. More frequent shampooing will only further dry out already dry hair leading to breakage. Once or twice per week is sufficient for dry strands.

2. Use a moisturizing shampoo that will clean the strands but also help to moisturize your tresses.

3. You may also want to consider using a conditioner instead of a shampoo to "wash" the hair and scalp. This is known as co-washing (conditioner washing).

4. Dry tresses are very fragile so ensure that when cleansing, you handle the strands very gently. Wet strands are also very fragile and will break off is not gently handled.

5. Be sure to deep condition at least once a month which will help to add needed moisture to the strands.

6. For severely dry strands, consider implementing a hot oil treatment on a weekly basis using olive oil, safflower oil, grape seed oil, castor oil, argan oil, coconut oil, etc. A lot of these oils can penetrate the hair strands to help moisturize the hair.

7. Use a leave in conditioner after cleansing in order to keep the strand moisturized.

8. Prevent the moisture from escaping easily after applying a leave in conditioner by applying oil such as olive, argan, coconut, castor, etc to the strands.

9. Prevent environmental elements from drying out your tresses by implementing a "protective style." This entails keeping the strands in buns, braids, in twists and many other protective styles that will prevent the ends of the hair from being exposed to the elements and drying out the ends leading to breakage.

10. Due to heating tools being very drying, eliminate or reduce the use of heating tools
