In our culture, appearing tanned is an indicator of good health and attractiveness. However, it can also be an indicator of too much time spent in the sun, which can be damaging to the skin. For reasons as benign as wrinkles as well as those that are more dangerous such as cancer, suntan spray can be a great alternative.

Skin cancer caused by sun exposure is well-represented in modern media. UV light, which is a component of sunlight that is not visible to the human eye, can damage essential parts of skin cells. When these cells replicate, as all cells do, they grow out of control and become cancer. Excess sun exposure is a major risk factor for skin cancer.

UV light in naturally-occurring amounts is not normally dangerous to other parts of the body, because it does not penetrate through the skin. And most skin cancer patients are lucky, because the more common type that is diagnosed is relatively easy to treat and unlikely to spread. However, malignant melanoma is a skin cancer that is one of the most dangerous of all cancers.

Besides the potential dangers to your health, excess sun exposure can also cause more benign unwanted side effects. Two of these include premature wrinkles, and age spots. Both are associated with getting too much sun, although they may not show up until years later.

It is usually pretty easy to remove the problem of excess sunlight from your life. Using a sunscreen-containing moisturizer or makeup with an SPF of at least 15 can provide everyday protection. Using a sunscreen with a higher SPF in combination with hats, long sleeves, and other protective clothing is generally good for extended outdoor exposure.

One mistake that some people make is assuming that because they rarely sunburn, they are safe from the other ill effects of the sun. In reality, sunburn is a topical condition that is painful in the short-term, but does no lasting damage. Permanent consequences occur in the skin cells that are not necessarily burned.

Choosing to use a suntan spray instead of getting a natural tan is a good idea for people who want to safeguard their future health and appearance. Modern sprays are much better at mimicking a natural appearance, and can even produce a gradually darkening shade, such as would be naturally acquired. Avoid excess sun, and enjoy a bronzed appearance with modern technology, instead.
